The Medieval City is still the largest fortified town in Europe and is made up of two huge ramparts each being flanked by 26 towers, in all covering an area of almost 3 km. The huge castle is built on the western face of the city and was constructed in the 12th century and in the 13th century was taken during the Albigensian Crusade and it was then annexed to the royal estate.
